Jonathan Van Tan[/B], Britain's deputy health chief, has found himself at the forefront of the government's response to the pandemic. His resignation from the post is seen as another blow to Boris Johnson who is being savaged by the opposition and his own MPs after new revelations of yet another cock-up amidst the lockdown.

The popular Van Tan announced today that he will step down at the end of March and return to his teaching duties at the University of Nottingham. Britain's health minister Sajid Javid said it was an "honour" to work with him.

Boris Johnson's wishes

Announcing his resignation, the 57-year-old professor said: "It has been the greatest privilege of my professional career to serve the British people during the pandemic."

In addition, he paid tribute to Professor Chris Withee, Chief Medical Officer for England, and other scientists working hard to put the brakes on the spread of the coronavirus outbreaks.

His presence at Downing Street briefings and in media interviews, as well as his flair for metaphors to describe the situation the UK found itself in with coronavirus, made him hugely popular.

For his part, Prime Minister Boris Johnson thanked him for his "outstanding contribution" to the country and his "invaluable advice" throughout the pandemic and wished him the best for the future."
