[BBp]Health Minister Michael Hadjipandela chaired a meeting this morning in the area, which [BBb]examined the serious problems at the hospital,[BBb] in the presence of representatives of local authorities and the leadership of the State Health Services Agency.[BBp][BBp]The most serious issue facing the local [BBb]Gold City Hospital[BBb] is the under-utilization of the [BBb]Accident and Emergency Department[BBb] where the Chemistry and Radiology Departments do not operate during the evening hours. The hospital has [BBb]three ambulances[BBb] but [BBb]two are out of service[BBb] essentially since only one is staffed during the night.[BBp][BBp]The Minister of Health [BBb]pledged[BBb] that before the end of the year, the staff of the Health Department will prepare [BBb]specific proposals[BBb] concerning the recruitment of the [BBb]necessary staff[BBb] to staff the radiology department and the chemistry department on a 24-hour basis.[BBp][BBp]During the meeting, concerns were recorded by State Health Services Agency officials with regard to the reopening of inpatient wards, stressing that better quality care could be provided to patients in the area if they were transferred in a timely manner for hospitalization at larger medical centers.[BBp][BBp]The health minister did not rule out the possibility [BBb]of specialist doctors visiting the local hospital [BBb]in order to examine local patients on the spot. Before the end of the year he will be able to give specific timetables for the implementation of these decisions, he said.[BBp][BBp]The mayor of Polos Chrysochous, Yotis Papachristofi[BBb], expressed hope that the required solutions will be provided immediately. [BBb][BBp][BBp]Paphos district MPs who attended the meeting expressed their displeasure at the state of the hospital and stressed that [BBb]public health issues should not be calculated in cold numbers [BBb]calling on the authorities to proceed with the autonomy of the Paphos district hospitals which are now under the Limassol-Pafos region[BBp][BBp].
