A mother was taken into custody in southern Spain today for kidnapping her children to prevent her ex-husband from vaccinating them against Covid-19.

Converging sources told Agence France-Presse today.

The 46-year-old woman was wanted by authorities for "child abduction" after a complaint was filed against her on December 16 by her husband who lives near Seville (Andalusia), a judicial source told AFP.

The husband complained that he had not heard from their two children, aged 12 and 14, since early November and accused his ex-wife of kidnapping them to prevent him from vaccinating them against Covid.

With police searching for her, the 46-year-old surrendered herself to justice "this morning" in Seville, with her "two children" with her, the judicial source explained.

The judge in charge of the case immediately alerted the police as an "arrest warrant" had been issued against her and "alerted the father" of the two children, according to the source.

According to a police spokesman, the two children, who had not been in school since early November, were handed over to their father this afternoon.

The mother was taken into custody and will appear before the courts, the source added.

Spain is one of Europe's champions in vaccinations against covid. 90% of citizens over the age of 12 have been vaccinated.
