Communications with Chernobyl and the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant were problematic

Russia's defence ministry said it had agreed to allow a team of Ukrainian maintenance workers to access power transmission lines around the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, Interfax reported, without giving further details.

Earlier, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said that communications with Chernobyl and also with the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant were problematic and that the situation was worrying.

This UN agency intends to present its proposals to Ukraine and Russia on the safety of nuclear facilities within the next few hours. A meeting is likely to be organized "very soon," its head, Rafael Grossi, said.

"It is encouraging one important thing: Ukraine and the Russian Federation want to work with us and have agreed to cooperate" with the IAEA, Grossi told a news conference after his trip to Turkey where he met, separately, with the two countries' foreign ministers Dmitry Kuleba and Sergei Lavrov.
