DISY revs up engines ahead of presidential elections Attention to opposition and Christodoulides Meeting on Saturday in Pindarou with the participation of Ministers and Commissioners
The Democratic Rally is stepping on the gas ahead of the presidential elections with the party's leadership and mechanism revving up, in order to enter the big battle in the best conditions to achieve the least possible losses.
The phrase "no one is left out" is not a figure of speech but one of the top priorities of Pindar and the government as everyone understands the stakes of the day ahead.
Better coordination between government and party is considered necessary by both sides while at the same time, there is a common realization that the party should step forward to defend the government's delivered work, much of which has been overshadowed by events and incidents that have aroused public interest and public sentiment, the first being the gold passport case.
Economy, management of the pandemic, social benefits, reduction of unemployment, promotion of reforms, the ambitious Recovery and Stability Plan "Cyprus Tomorrow", the YESY, the digital transformation of the state, major development projects, and many others, are included in the list of government achievements that will be the spearhead of the political and communication agenda in view of the elections.
At the same time, however, it will seek to promote projects where there are delays or obstacles in order to wheel out solutions. For the government and DISY, the implementation of President Anastasiades' election program is considered a big bet that they want to win, because it will underpin much of the argumentation ahead of 2023. A positive assessment of the government's work will also be an advantage for the party, especially if it is called upon to fight the election without allies. The better coordination between the government and DISY and the review of the progress of the government's work will be put under the microscope at a meeting to be held on Saturday at DISY, with the participation of ministers and commissioners, in the presence of party president and presidential candidate Averof Neophytou.
Attention to the opposition and Christodoulides
But apart from the above, the party's leadership and machinery are moving on the trajectory of the Supreme Council meeting set for March 12, during which the candidacy of Averof Neophytou for the presidency of the Republic is expected to be confirmed. DISY is monitoring developments on the opposition front and at this point there will not be any move, given DIKO's public position that it will seek dialogue with the opposition parties first. In DISY they estimate that the envisaged DIKO-AKEL cooperation will encounter many obstacles, due to different approaches on a number of key issues (Cyprus and Economy) but mainly due to difficulties in finding a personality that will be able to act coherently and rally the two or more parties.
In any case, Pindarou is following the political flirtation between the two major opposition parties with concern and reflection, because any cooperation will create a political pole with claims. The attention of the party's leadership is also directed towards Nikos Christodoulides, in order to probe his intentions. According to the Cyprus Times, the assessment of the DISY leadership is that Nikos Christodoulides is moving in a way that leaves no doubt that he will enter the presidential election battle, despite the fact that party officials are spreading the word that he will not attempt to take the step. According to the same sources, if there is no drastic reversal, Nikos Christodoulides will be an independent candidate, since from his contacts so far he seems to be receiving encouraging messages.
