A deadly fire broke out last night in an apartment in Kolonaki, where 87-year-old Eleni Papadopoulou died tragically.

The elderly woman, who was suffering from mobility problems, lived alone in the apartment of 750.000 euros in Kolonaki, while she was the widow of Yannis Papadopoulos, a minister in Andreas Papandreou's second government.

Who was Yannis Papadopoulos

Yannis Papadopoulos was born in 1924 in Samothrace. He studied medicine in Athens and London and was a plastic surgeon. During the Occupation he joined EPON and ELAS, and in 1947 he was exiled to Ikaria. During the junta he was a member of the Presidium of the Democratic Defence (whose members included Kostas Simitis, Sakis Karagiorgas, Georgios Alexandros Maggakis, Nikos Konstantopoulos, etc.). In August 1969 he was arrested and imprisoned until 1973.

He was one of the founding members of the New Forces, which collaborated with the Centre Union in 1974, and a member of its Presidium. He was a member of the Evros Parliament with the Union of Centrist New Forces from 1974 to 1977. In 1979 he joined PASOK, with which he was elected MP for Evros in 1981 and 1985.

He was Minister of Northern Greece from July 1985 to February 1987, in the second government of Andreas Papandreou. He was succeeded by Stelios Papathemelis. He was also a governor of the People's Hospital, a member and vice-president of the KEDEA, a member of the Human Rights Committee, etc. She died in 2007 at the age of 83.

"She fell asleep with her cigarette lit in her hand" says the son of the unfortunate woman

Speaking to protothema.gr, the elderly woman's son, Alexandros Papadopoulos, explained that the fire broke out as his mother fell asleep with a cigarette in her hand.

The elderly woman's son visited her almost daily. But on the fateful Saturday he was unable to go up to her apartment. He was stopped by the flames and could not see her. Terrified, facing the suffocating scene, he called for first aid, hoping that at least at the last moment his mother would emerge unharmed from the smoke.

But he remembers that until the last hours of her life she remained intact, not suffering from any health problem or dementia, as he says.

Meanwhile, the apartment of the unfortunate elderly Eleni Papadopoulou who was "lost" in the flames has been for sale for some time.

The apartment was in the advertisements of real estate agencies with a purchase cost of 750,000 euros. It is a third floor apartment, 242 sq.m. in a building with special architectural elements, inter-war era, with four bedrooms and a large terrace overlooking Lycabettus.
