A leader of a criminal organization in Mexico, who became one of the most wanted in the country because of his gang's industrial-scale oil theft, has been sentenced to 60 years in prison, prosecutors announced yesterday, Friday.

Jose Antonio Yepes, a notorious fuel thief accused of inciting a horrific spike in violence in the central state of Guanajuato, was arrested in 2020. His arrest was considered one of President Andrés Manuel Lopez Obrador's greatest successes.

Known by the nickname "El Marro" "The Barber"), Yepes was the boss of the Santa Rosa de Lima cartel, based in Guanajuato, where he was at war with the Jalisco Youth Generation Cartel (CJNG), one of Mexico's most powerful and violent gangs.

The Guanajuato attorney general's office said in a Twitter post that a district court found Yepes and his associates "guilty of the crime of kidnapping."

Yepes was one of the most notorious criminals arrested to date under Lopez Obrador's presidency, who has vowed to fight an upsurge in violence and curb the rampant theft of oil from pipelines owned by state oil giant Pemex.

The Santa Rosa de Lima cartel was involved in a range of criminal activities in Guanajuato, from drug smuggling to kidnappings. Fuel theft was often an easy source of revenue in a state crisscrossed by pipelines and home to a large refinery.
