MEP Papadakis raised the issue of revenge pornography before the European Commission He submitted a written question to the European Commission
The MEP of the Political Group of Socialists and Democrats, Mr Dimitris Papadakis, has submitted a written question to the European Commission on revenge pornography.
Mr Papadakis pointed out that recently more and more incidents of sexual abuse through images and/or videos (also known as "revenge porn" and "cyber crime") are taking place on the internet, taking the form of a scourge.
The MEP stressed that revenge pornography is now widely used as a method of abuse, violence and harassment against women and girls, with dramatic consequences.
Since, specific studies have found that people who are victims of such acts experience many psychological difficulties, ranging from severe anxiety and stress to symptoms of depression and suicidal ideation, Mr. Papadakis submitted the following question to the European Commission:
"- What measures does it intend to propose to better coordinate national provisions against revenge pornography and violence on the Internet?
Is there a uniform and harmonised framework for digital platforms and information service providers in dealing with illegal content disseminated by users?
What does it intend to do to protect the fundamental rights of victims who, without their knowledge and without their consent, have such photos and/or videos published?"
