The aim is to increase private investment in research and innovation, says Mastrogiannopoulos
The Chief Scientist, Chairman of the Board of Directors of IDEK, Dr. Nicholas Mastrogiannopoulos presented on Monday the report on the achievements and next goals and future projects to the President of the Republic, on the occasion of the completion of about two years since his appointment.
A press release from the office of Mr.Mastroyiannopoulos said that in his statements President Anastasiades mentioned that Cyprus is moving forward and that the Research and Innovation ecosystem is evolving. Our priority is to fully exploit and further boost the high dynamics that our country has developed in the fields of research and innovation, aiming at a positive impact on the economy and, by extension, on society," the President said, according to the press release.
He congratulated the Chief Scientist and his colleagues for the progress made so far, expressing confidence that much more will follow.
Dr. Mastroyannopoulos presented the important steps taken in recent years in the field of Research and Innovation, making special reference to the remarkable performance of Cypriot institutions in both European and domestic funding programmes.
He pointed out that within the framework of the Foundation's funding programmes for the period 2020 - 2021, the Research and Innovation Foundation allocated more than €51 million in funding to the domestic ecosystem.
In addition, the Chief Scientist referred to the new framework of Research and Innovation Programmes for the period 2021-2027, with a budget of €150 million, which, with a philosophy of targeted investments and building on competitive sectors of the economy, aims at the practical exploitation of new technologies, the creation of new dual-use industry and green, blue and digital transition and development.
"Our aim is to increase private investment in research and innovation, strengthen partnerships between research organisations and businesses, encourage and support knowledge transfer and commercialisation, and enhance the extroversion and internationalisation of our ecosystem," he said.
In this way, he concluded, we are transforming research and innovation into a horizontal pillar of development that will enhance the country's competitiveness and dynamism in the international environment, so that it will have a real impact on the economy and society of Cyprus.
