The incident occurred at around 09.00 local time when this man attacked three municipal police officers, the city's deputy mayor for security and municipal police, Yanik Oanesian told AFP.
The colleagues of the police officer who was wounded "initially responded by using non-lethal weapons, then one of them" fired, fatally wounding the attacker, he explained.
According to Interior Minister Gérard Darmanin, who was in Marseille this morning for the inauguration of the new police headquarters, "the perpetrator is French."
To my knowledge, for the moment, he is not known to the police authorities and had a clean criminal record."
