New documentary reveals Christian Bruckner "regularly carried out repair work" at the hotel where little Madeleine disappeared 15 years ago - His mobile phone was "no more than five minutes away" from the resort, at the time of the disappearance
Revelations about the prime suspect in the 2007 disappearance of little Madeleine in Praia da Luz are revealed in a new documentary by German TV channel SAT.1According to the documentary, 44-year-old Christian Bruckner, considered the prime suspect in the disappearance and convicted of rape, was working at the Ocean Club resort as a maintenance worker.
Bruckner "performed regular repair work" as a maintenance worker, and based on the evidence, he is said to be very familiar with the resort, located in Alcarve, Portugal, and the surrounding area. His mobile phone, new analysis shows, was "no more than five minutes away" from the Ocean Club when the little girl disappeared.
However, Bruckner claimed, speaking to investigative documentary reporter Jutta Rabe, that he used the battered van, in which he was staying at the time, to deal drugs. He insists on his innocence in the letters they exchanged and calls absurd "like starting a nuclear war or slaughtering a chicken" the idea that he kidnapped Madeleine.
While he admits to dealing drugs, he claims the police never caught him because he "followed a few basic principles." "I only drove during the day, when possible, so as not to draw attention to my crashed hippy van. I only drove on the roads I needed to," he said, explaining that he never wanted to provoke the police.
In any case, Bruckner doesn't feel there is any reason to comment on the Brownswaig prosecution's charges, as "in theory, he could sit back and relax and just wait for the findings."
German prosecutors are convinced that he is the man responsible for the disappearance
However, police have publicly named him as the prime suspect in the 2020 case. Evidence suggests he had a half-hour phone call near the apartment where the McCanns lived. And German prosecutors are convinced he was responsible for the little girl's disappearance. Yet despite an intensive investigation, they have not filed charges.
Authorities believe Bruckner has admitted the kidnapping to a friend. The team of German investigators, led by public prosecutor Christian Wolters, is convinced he has killed Madeleine.
The documentary's makers say they have seen old recordings of conversations between the 44-year-old and a man convicted of sex offences in 2013. The man, who was spotted at his home in southern Germany, where he runs a funeral home, was a "regular client" of Bruckner's and they "exchanged material" between them.
Bruckner allegedly wrote about his pedophile fantasies and that he wanted to engage in captivity.
He is now incarcerated in a maximum security prison in Oldenburg, near Bremen in northwest Germany as he has been sentenced to seven years for the rape of a 73-year-old American pensioner at her home in Praia da Luz in 2005.
They believe in his guilt but have circumstantial evidence
German prosecutor Volters had said last year that they were 100 percent certain of Bruckner's guilt. However, the evidence they had gathered was circumstantial.
At the same time, he said prosecutors have no proof that Madeleine is dead, nor do they know how she died, and they have no evidence linking Bruckner to her estimated murder.
"We don't have a body and DNA, but we have other evidence. Based on the evidence we have, we are not led to any other conclusion. There is no hope that she is alive."
