Macron and Putin agreed to continue the dialogue on the Ukrainian issue "Moscow must respect the national sovereignty of neighbouring countries", said an official of the French Presidency

The President of France, Emmanuel Macron, told his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, today that Moscow must respect the national sovereignty of neighbouring countries, a French Presidency official said.

The two leaders, in telephone communication earlier, also agreed that their countries would seek to hold quadrilateral talks within the so-called "Normandy format" (France, Germany, Russia, Ukraine) in order to reduce tensions, the same source added.

"President Putin said he wanted the dialogue to continue and that it was important to work on the implementation of the Minsk agreements," the official said. He added that the Russian president stressed that he did not want the situation to escalate. Putin and Macron agreed to continue the dialogue, according to Elise, and agreed that de-escalation is necessary."

"President Putin did not express any aggressive intentions. He said clearly that he does not seek confrontation," the French Presidency statement said. Moreover, on the talks concerning Iran's nuclear program, the French official said they remain "difficult" but there are signs that an agreement could be reached.
