Against the 2017 quarterly examinations and regulations, the Limassol ESEM Conference said in a statement

Signs against the quarterly examinations and disagreement with the new operating regulations passed in Parliament in 2017 were adopted at yesterday's conference of the Limassol District Students' Coordination Committee.

A statement from the Limassol Pupil Council of Limassol said that the conference was held at Linopetra High School, in the presence of the Director of Secondary Education, a representative of the School Departments and a representative of the Federation of Secondary Limassol Parents' Associations, while members of the Central Pupil Councils from almost all high schools and technical schools of the city and district of Limassol also participated.

Representatives of the Pancyprian Student Coordinating Committee (PSCC), welcomed the event, stressing the importance of the democratic procedures followed by the Organized Student Movement. Moreover, they added, the PESM made it clear that the Organized Student Movement will continue to the end the struggle for a humane and democratic school.

The District Director of Secondary Education and a representative of the Limassol Federation of Secondary Education Parents' Associations also addressed the event.

During the conference there was a very productive discussion on the various issues concerning schools, society and education and it is noted that "through creative dialogue, we tried to come to all those conclusions and proposals that will help us overcome the current problems we face, both we as students and our educational system".

A resolution on education and disagreement with the new operating regulations passed in Parliament in February 2017 and a resolution against the quarterly examinations were submitted to the Conference by the NSEM Secretariat.

The above resolutions were adopted and call upon the NSEM Secretariat to take strong action against the quarterly examinations if the Ministry of Education insists on their implementation.</BB-17

"As students we cannot accept that our schools will be turned into examination centres where we will only be concerned with examinations and compete with our classmates for marks," the statement added. The statement added that the problems, concerns and suggestions heard at the conference will be codified and forwarded to the concerned authorities through memoranda and meetings."Also the fact that we, the students, can through our democratic procedures demand mature, responsible and organized intervention in the issues that concern us, sends messages to all those who want us unmotivated and apathetic in the face of daily developments," concludes the Limassol ESEM.Source: CNA
