The Ukrainian army announced on Friday that it had recaptured from theRussians a site in the Donetsk region, in the east of the country, at a time when Moscow is holding annexation referendums in areas of Ukraine under its control.

"The Ukrainian army captured Yatskivka," Oleksiy Gromov, an official of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, announced on television.

The capture of this site on the eastern bank of the Oskil River appears to confirm the continuation of a Ukrainian counteroffensive that has already allowed Kiev to recapture several thousand square kilometers in the neighboring Kharkiv region.

"The Ukrainians have also restored their control over positions south of Bakhmut," a key city in the Donetsk region that has been a target for weeks of Russian attacks, Gromov said.

Referendums on Russia's annexation began Friday in regions of Ukraine wholly or partly controlled by Moscow, referendums described as "rigged" by Kiev and the West and marking a major escalation of the conflict.
