Appointment of Judges Papasavvas and Markoullis as judges at the EU's General Court
Nine judges of the General Court of the European Union (CJEU) were appointed by member state representatives on Monday, according to a statement from the EU Council.
Among others, it was announced the reappointment by Cyprus of Anna Markoullis and Savvas S. Papasavvas for the period from 1 September 2022 to 31 August 2028. Lauri Madise and Iko Nõmm (Estonia) and Tuula Pynnä and Heikki Kanninen (Finland) are reappointed for the same period.
These appointments are made in the context of the partial renewal of the General Court of the EU in 2022 which concerns the posts of 26 judges.
Also announced was the appointment of Damjan Kukovec (Slovenia) as a judge of the CJEU until 31 August 2025. The appointment comes as part of the third stage of the reform of the CJEU, following the appointment of nine additional judges to the CJEU from 1 September 2019, five of whom complete their term of office on 31 August 2025.
Also announced are the appointment of Ioannis Dimitrakopoulos (Greece) as a judge at the CJEU until 31 August 2022, and Suzanne Kingston (Ireland) until 31 August 2025. These appointments follow the appointments of Demetrios Gracias (Greece) as a judge at the Court of Justice of the EU (CJEU) and Anthony Collins (Ireland) as Advocate General at the CJEU from 7 October 2021, hence the two countries were invited to propose their replacements for the remainder of the term of office.
