"Joint initiatives to build confidence, revive the belief that the solution will bring benefits" say AKEL - PKK What they say in a joint statement
On 1 March 2022, a particularly constructive meeting took place at the CTP offices between AKEL General Secretary Stefanos Stefanou and the President of the Republican Turkish Party (CTP) Toufan Erhiurman, who were accompanied by representatives of both parties. During the meeting, we explicitly reaffirmed our commitment to the resumption of substantive negotiations for a comprehensive solution on the agreed basis of a bizonal bicommunal federation with political equality, as set out in the relevant UN Security Council resolutions.
We reiterated our deep concern about the ongoing deadlock and the multifaceted risks and harmful consequences of the current situation to the detriment of both communities. We stressed that the status quo is neither static nor sustainable and that the uncertainties surrounding the future of our island require the resumption of the negotiating process in accordance with UN parameters and from the point where the negotiations were suspended in Crans-Montana in 2017.
It is our common observation that the prolonged stalemate, the absence of political will for a meaningful continuation of the negotiations, the negative rhetoric and the escalation of tensions in recent years have had a negative impact on both communities. Therefore, we agreed to continue our cooperation and to take additional joint initiatives to build confidence, to reinvigorate the belief that a solution will bring benefits and to give voice to the forces in both communities that demand the resumption of negotiations and a comprehensive settlement of the Cyprus problem on the agreed basis.
