Putin's address to the Russian people Smells like gunpowder in Eastern Ukraine According to the Russian news agency Tass, "Vladimir Putin's speech will come soon."
A new escalation is taking place on the Russian-Ukrainian border, as powerful Russian military forces remain, as the Americans continue to claim, "ready to invade" Ukraine.
In anticipation of Russia's decision to recognize the separatists in Donetsk and Lugansk in eastern Ukraine, Vladimir Putin is expected to address the Russian people in the coming days.
According to the Russian news agency Tass, "Vladimir Putin's speech will come soon," without specifying the exact time.
Putin's addresses to citizens, with the exception of New Year's and other celebratory speeches, were extremely rare before the pandemic. In total, since 2000, he has addressed the Russian people 18 times.
The most proclamations in one year - five - by Putin occurred in 2020, indicative of the criticality of the situation in eastern Ukraine.
The Russian president's last address took place on September 16, 2021 - the eve of the State Duma elections.
What about the separatists in eastern Ukraine
The speech comes as Vladimir Putin earlier said it was necessary to consider the appeal of the leaders of Russian-speaking separatists in the Donetsk and Lugansk regions, who called on the Russian president to formally recognize their regions as independent. In fact, the decision is expected to be taken today.
At the meeting of Russia's security council, Putin said that the threat to Russia would increase significantly if Ukraine were to join NATO.
"Dear colleagues, I have listened to your opinion. The decision will be made today," Putin said, thanking the members of the Security Council who participated in the meeting.
It should be noted that although the Russian-speaking pro-Russian separatists have unilaterally declared the "independence" of the so-called "people's republics" of Donetsk and Lugansk as early as 2014, Moscow has not yet officially recognized these "republics" with which it nevertheless maintains close ties.
The Russian Duma (lower house of parliament) has also recently promoted resolutions asking Putin to proceed with the recognition of the independence of these regions.
If the Russian president does make such a move, he will not be able to continue to invoke the Minsk agreements, which recognise greater autonomy for these regions but within the borders of Ukraine.
"Dear colleagues, I heard your opinion. The decision will be made. Today! I want to thank you for this meeting": After listening to the opinion of the members of the Security Council, Putin took a break and will announce his decision a little later https:/t.co/DAWqITEdmW
