State Budget 2022 In Cyprus corruption is institutional, said Irini Charalambidou

Speaking in the House of Assembly during the debate on the 2022 State Budget, Charalambidou said that "in Cyprus we are not faced with opportunistic but institutional corruption and that in itself should strengthen the resolve of this Parliament for an effective Anti-Corruption Authority.

In her speech, the AKEL MP said the value of the Anti-Corruption Authority "will be seen in its confrontation with officials who trade our national wealth and national dignity for their own enrichment and if it is not given the required powers it will end up being a communication bubble".

"The real independence of the institutions must be guaranteed while the quality of democracy is not enhanced by appointments of political transactions and decisions taken by a single person," the AKEL MP said.

She added that "so if we have to change the Constitution, we should cooperate and do it, because our Constitution cannot meet the modern needs of society and the so-called 'institutional checks and balances' have been lost since it was designed on the basis of a different logic, that of bicommunal character."</BB-8
