He was carrying out maintenance on a waterfall harness while he was eight metres high and using flammable material, the unfortunate Dikani Lonwabo Eric, from South Africa, who on Saturday afternoon died tragically.

The fatal work accident that claimed the life of the 38-year-old from South Africa occurred on a ship anchored in Limassol.


"Under circumstances under investigation, a fire broke out in the flammable material causing it to ignite, both he and the rope supporting him to fall to the deck. The fire was extinguished with the use of water and the ship's doctor who examined him found his death," Limassol Police Spokesman Lefteris Kyriakou said in a statement yesterday.

The unfortunate 38-year-old was taken by boat, along with the ship's doctor, to Limassol port and then by ambulance to Limassol hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Members of the police went to the scene for the relevant investigations and interrogations.

The autopsy on the body of the unfortunate man will be carried out today by the coroner Angeliki Papeta, while the competent authorities have been informed about the accident.
