Cyprus' aid to Ukraine is being concentrated at the port of Limassol "Unprecedented mobilization" Perhaps the largest so far, officials say
Perhaps the largest humanitarian aid from Cyprus to a third country, began gathering this morning at a Cyprus Ports Authority warehouse opposite the port of Limassol, with a view to loading it onto a merchant ship that will depart on Tuesday.
The whole effort will continue tomorrow, with the assistance of the National Guard, which has undertaken to transport Cyprus' humanitarian aid to the Port Authority premises and it is an "unprecedented mobilisation", ALC President Dr Antonis Stylianou told the Cyprus News Agency.
"The Cyprus Ports Authority has taken over the coordination of the management and stowage of these materials and we are really happy to contribute to the provision of this humanitarian aid to Ukraine," Stylianou said.
He also thanked the National Guard for its contribution and the Cyprus Government for organizing this whole process, "providing a huge amount of essentials for the humanitarian crisis that exists in Ukraine."
For his part, the director of the Port of Limassol, Panagiotis Agathokleous, told the Cyprus News Agency that "in cooperation with the National Guard and other volunteer services, we have undertaken probably one of the largest operations of sending state aid to a third country".
"In this context, we have started since this morning the collection of aid in various items and foodstuffs needed by the Ukrainian people in the difficult times they are going through, and we continue until tomorrow afternoon to collect all the nationwide aid, with a view to loading it on Tuesday morning on the ship that will take it to the nearest destination and then by road to Ukraine," he added.
Finally, he congratulated the Cypriot Government for the initiative and the invitation - a challenge, as he said, for the Ports Authority to take over the management of the operation, expressing at the same time his certainty that "it will be a complete success, so that our state will stand up to the demands of the international community."
