Turkish Defence Minister Houloussi Akar referred to Turks in Western Thrace in his provocative statement of the day.
Speaking at a memorial event for minority MP Sadiq Ahmet, whom Turkey's defence minister described as a "great defender of the just struggle of the Turks of Western Thrace", Akar did not omit once again his well-known rhetoric against Greece over the 10-mile airspace and "denounced" the sale of islands that "do not belong" to Greece.
"Greece is trying to give the image of a victim country by distorting all kinds of data and dressed in a lamb's sheepskin to cover its illegal and aggressive actions, resorting to the EU to create an alliance within an alliance to turn its problems with Turkey into problems between Turkey and the EU, Turkey and the US and Turkey and NATO. Greece is acting against international law, logic and good neighbourly relations. It cannot be explained by logic or law that it has 10 miles of airspace. There has never been such a practice in history," the Turkish foreign minister argued.
He also claimed that Greece "violated the demilitarization regime on at least 16 of the 23 islands in violation of international agreements, particularly the Lausanne Treaty," adding, "Moreover, by including these islands in various exercises, it is trying to deceive NATO and third countries by claiming rocky islets whose sovereignty has not been transferred by any treaty and even putting some of these islands up for sale."
He even accused Greece of expansionism as according to him the Greek state was founded in 1832 with an area of 47,517 square kilometers and today it has almost 3 times more area after 7 stages of expansion.
