Armenia is ready to establish diplomatic relations and open its borders with Turkey, Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan has confirmed.

Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said last week that he had "productive and constructive" talks with Mirzoyan as the two countries seek to repair relations after decades of hostility.

"I am glad to hear from my Turkish counterpart that there is the political will to complete the process," Mirzoyan also said.

The talks between the two ministers in Antalya were the first since 2009. The two countries have never had diplomatic relations since Armenia's declaration of independence after the fall of the USSR until today.

The genocide of 1.5 million Armenians in 1915, which Turkey denies, is the biggest of the issues that divide them.

Turkey, Reuters notes, admits that Armenians were killed in conflicts within the Ottoman Empire, but denies that the killings were systematic or that they constitute genocide.
