[BR]The municipality of Rotterdam announced today that a historic bridge in the Dutch port city will be temporarily dismantled to allow the passage of a ship, a huge sailing ship being built for former Amazon Chairman and CEO Jeff Bezos, according to local media.
The iconic bridge, which dates back to 1878 and was repaired after being bombed in 1940 during World War II, is too low for the passage of the US billionaire's ship, which is a luxury yacht worth 430 million euros, according to local media reports.
The shipbuilder has asked the municipality of Rotterdam to temporarily dismantle the bridge, removing its central section so the ship can pass underneath. This is the only passage to the sea, a spokesman for the Rotterdam municipality told Agence France-Presse, adding that the costs of the operation would be paid by the shipyard.
The yacht is currently being built in Alblasserdam, near Rotterdam, and is expected to pass under the Koningsavenbrug bridge, which is too low for the three-deck sailing vessel, this summer. The municipality has agreed to dismantle the bridge, despite promising after a major renovation in 2017 that the artefact, known as the De Hef to Rotterdam residents, would never be dismantled again.
The municipality of Rotterdam pointed out the economic importance and jobs created by the shipbuilding of the yacht and assured that the bridge will be restored to its current form.
