Handcuffs and the mother of the 34-year-old Bulgarian were also handcuffed by the prosecuting authorities, who was arrested yesterday for conspiracies set up against citizens of Paphos for extorting money under the pretext that their relative would be involved in a traffic accident.

According to the Cyprus[/B] Times, his mother was arrested last night, with the 34-year-old, who speaks Greek well, admitting his involvement in the cases of defrauding citizens to extort money.

Specifically, the 34-year-old admitted that he was involved in both previous cases, while at the same time claiming that the mastermind was in his country and that he was simply receiving instructions to receive the money and send it to his country.

It is recalled that a 51-year-old woman from Paphos received a phone call yesterday morning from an unknown person, who told her that her daughter had a serious accident and that she had to undergo a surgical operation and that for this purpose she would have to deposit a sum of 50 thousand euros.

According to the Cyprus Times, the woman said that she had only 20 thousand in her possession, the stranger was "persuaded" to take only this amount and so the woman went to a banking institution to withdraw the amount. There, what she reported aroused the suspicions of a bank employee who contacted the police.

Instead of banknotes, paper was put in the envelope prepared for the fraudsters!

As the spokesman and Head of the Paphos CID Michael Michael says about the case, the potential victim and the bank cooperated with the Paphos CID and as a result the victim was followed from the bank to the meeting point because he was guided by telephone by one of the alleged perpetrators. After a discreet surveillance, which led the victim to the area of the Church of St. Kendeas, upon receipt of the envelope, members of the Pafos Crime Detection Department acted immediately and arrested a 34-year-old from Bulgaria in the act.

The 34-year-old man was taken into custody for a case of extorting money by false representations posing as a doctor, according to the Spokesman and Head of the Paphos CID Michael Nicolaou.

The 34-year-old, who allegedly has associates, on two occasions extorted 10 thousand euros and 7 thousand euros from unsuspecting women and today went to receive another 20 thousand euros allegedly intended for the recovery of their relatives.

According to the police, in recent days there have been complaints to the police from citizens who receive phone calls from strangers trying to defraud them in order to extort money from them.

Specifically, they were receiving calls, he said, from an unknown number and were told that allegedly their daughter, son or relatives had been involved in road traffic collisions and that there was an urgent need for them to undergo surgery.

To this end, allegedly to cover medical expenses, the fraudsters are asking for a sum of money.
