Greece bids farewell to Karolos Papoulias With head of state honours at his funeral service

The funeral service of Karolos Papoulias is currently being held at the Church of St. Spyridon in Pagrati. The former President of the Republic passed away on Sunday morning (26/12), at the age of 92.

Due to health measures, the burial of Karolos Papoulias will be held in a close family circle on Thursday 30 December 2021, at his birthplace on the island of Ioannina.

The family expressed the wish that any donations be made to the Ark of the World and the Society for the Protection of Spastic Patients "Porta Open".

With Head of State honours

By decision of the government, his funeral will be held with Head of State honours.

It was also decided to observe public mourning from the day of his death and for three days, as well as on the day of his funeral.

Flags will be flown at half-mast in public buildings throughout the country today.

Preparations have begun at the island of Ioannina for his burial

Former President of the Republic Karolos Papoulias will be buried tomorrow (30.12.2021) at the island of Ioannina.

At the cemetery of the area, preparations for his burial have begun as shown in the photos of Intime.gr.

His route

He was born in the village of Molyvdoskepastos of Ioannina and was the son of Major General Gregory Papoulias. He graduated from the Law School of Athens.

He did his postgraduate studies at the University of Milan (Public International Law and International Relations) and then received his doctorate from the University of Cologne (Private International Law).

His doctoral thesis was entitled: "Erwerb und Verlust des unmittelbaren Besitzes im griechishen und deutschen Recht" ("The acquisition and loss of immediate possession in Greek and German law").

In 1974 he joined PASOK and was continuously elected as a deputy of Ioannina for 26 years (1977-2004). In the first government of Andreas Papandreou, he was appointed Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, a position he held until 1984, before being promoted to Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs.

In 1985-1989 he served as Minister of Foreign Affairs, while in the ecumenical Zolotas government of 1989-1990 he served as Deputy Minister of National Defence. He returned to the post of Foreign Minister in 1993, remaining until 1996 and the resignation of the Papandreou Government in view of the election of Costas Simitis as Prime Minister. Finally, he served as Chairman of the National Defence and Foreign Affairs Committee of the Parliament.

On 12 December 2004 he was nominated by Prime Minister Kostas Karamanlis for the office of President of the Republic. PASOK was also in favour of the proposal. In the first vote held in the Parliament on 8 February 2005, Karolos Papoulias was elected President of the Republic in the first round with 279 votes.

On 3 February 2010, Karolos Papoulias was re-elected to the highest office of the country with 266 votes out of a total of 298 votes cast. He was outvoted by all the Parliamentary Groups of PASOK, ND and LAOS. This result made him the third President to be re-elected for a second term. He is married to Maria Panou and has three daughters.
