Ginger biscuits in large quantities in Sweden for traditional houses
Towards the end of each year, huge quantities of ginger biscuits are prepared and shipped to every local supermarket in Sweden for consumption and also because many people use them as Christmas decorations. Many also buy kits with walls, roofs and chimneys to build their own tiny house with ginger biscuits.
With this festive mood in mind, the architects at Ulf ejergren Architects (UMA) made the decision this year to explore what could be done if they used ginger biscuits as a building material for a larger-scale shelter. The result was an edible hut made from hundreds of ginger biscuits. Instead of preparing them themselves in the oven, they opted to buy ready-made biscuits of unmistakable shape.
They cut a garden hose for a skeleton, creating two large connected trays. The two discs tilt towards each other at the top and gradually the distance between them grows downwards to become both walls and the roof of the hut.
They added four high quality reinforcing bars to the ground to make the structure stronger ( https:/www.instagram.com/p/CXTYYVNs1GH/ ). Choosing classic heart-shaped ginger cookies, they decided to use a glue gun to glue them together instead of melted sugar since this solution would not work in low temperatures.
