Four Russian Tupolev fighters were finally the aircraft that caused the mobilization of British fighters shortly before noon when they entered a "British area of interest" north of Scotland.

The British Royal Air Force (RAF) announced late this afternoon that it was two Tu-95 Bear H and two Tu-142 Bear F aircraft, i.e. bombers and reconnaissance aircraft.

The four Russian planes were accompanied by British Typhoons which took off from RAF Lossiemouth base at Moray, Scotland, supported by Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft from a base at Oxfordshire.

"At no time did the Russian bombers enter UK sovereign airspace," the official RAF statement clarified."

Meanwhile, a British frigate in conjunction with a US aircraft carrier are monitoring the course of two Russian warships sailing across the English Channel.
