New cases of coronavirus in Belgium continue to decline

New cases of coronavirus in Belgium continue to decline and for the first time since November, fewer than 700 patients with COVID-19 are being treated in intensive care units, according to data released on Friday by the national health institute Sciensano.

As reported by the Brussels Times, 2,205 patients are being treated in hospitals in Belgium, with the number down 26% compared to last week.

Also, 660 patients are in intensive care, down 16% compared to last week. The last time the number was lower than 700 was 27 November when 696 were hospitalised in ICU.

In terms of the spread of the virus, in the week 14 20 December an average of 7,472 new cases per day were recorded. These numbers represent a 36% decrease compared to the previous week.

At the same time, the rate of Omicron variant cases is increasing rapidly while Delta infections are simultaneously decreasing.

The number of tests also decreased, with an average of 72,200 tests per day carried out during the week of 14 20 December, 18% less than the previous week. The positivity rate in the previous period was 12.1%, a decrease of 3.3%.

Also, between 13 and 19 December, the replication rate was 0.77, which means that on average each person infected transmits the virus to less than one person.
