Extraordinary OSCE meeting tomorrow on the Ukrainian issue A diplomatic formula is urgently sought OSCE observers have recorded an increase in clashes in recent days
The Permanent Council of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) will meet tomorrow Monday to try to find a way out of the Ukrainian crisis, Poland, the country currently holding the chairmanship of the Organisation, announced today.
"The meeting has been convened for tomorrow," Polish Deputy Foreign Minister Pawel Jablonski told PAP. The OSCE thus responded to the request made by Ukraine because of the heightened tension in the Donbass region.
US officials said the meeting is scheduled to start at 14.00 GMT (16.00 hours Cyprus time).
Increased clashes
OSCE observers have recorded an increase in clashes between pro-Russian separatists and the Ukrainian army in recent days, with hundreds of shells being fired. The crisis in Donbass began in 2014 and has so far claimed the lives of 14,000 people.
Ukraine has called for an emergency OSCE meeting to discuss "the rapidly deteriorating security situation on the ground," according to a Twitter post by Poland's permanent representative to the organization, Adam Halachinsky.
To avoid a clash
"The goal is to discuss what has been happening in the last few hours and what measures will be taken by the OSCE to lead to a de-escalation of tension," Jablonski said. "We will use all available tools to avoid an armed conflict," he added."
Poland has taken over the rotating chairmanship of the OSCE, a Vienna-based organisation whose members include Russia and Ukraine, among other countries, for this year.
