"Limit your travels"
The Region of Attica and the motorways "Nea Odos" and "Morea" ask citizens to limit their travels only to the necessary travels at the weekend, due to the dangerous weather phenomena expected.
After the bad weather "Elpida" which caused unprecedented problems, the residents of Attica are basically asked not to travel through the motorways, but also to limit their travel within the basin.
The Region of Attica, as stated in a relevant announcement, taking into account the data set by EMY and the scientific partners of the Region of the National Observatory of Athens, warns that in Attica the risk is particularly increased, because the upcoming heavy rainfall and storms combined with the accumulated snow of recent days may cause dangerous flooding.
Therefore, the Region of Attica strongly recommends that residents of the basin to avoid unnecessary travel especially on Saturday 29/01/2022, to be informed about the development of extraordinary weather phenomena, to be particularly careful /
Citizens should be particularly careful in the areas of Attica where the snow cover remains, but also in the areas on both sides of the streams and rivers from the mountains to the estuary, because the level is expected to rise with the possibility of overflow.
The situation is expected to be particularly aggravated by last year's fires, which deforested large areas of forest, which significantly increases water runoff, it said.
In summary, the Region of Attica strongly recommends the following to citizens.-Keep away from estuaries, river and stream beds, Irish fords, bridges, rapids and landslide areas.-Do not attempt to cross a stream on foot or by car under any circumstances. If in an immobilised car, leave it immediately as it may be swept away or flooded.
-Carefully climb to a safe high point, e.g. to a higher floor (leaving basements and ground floors) or to a higher altitude.
-If they are in a building at risk of being flooded by water, turn off the power and water supply, climb to the roof in case of emergency and signal for help.
-If they are outdoors, stay away from power lines or ground-based electricity installations as there is a serious risk of electric shock.
-Keep abreast of weather developments, warnings and emergency bulletins.[IF AN EVACUATION ORDER IS GIVEN, THEY SHOULD LEAVE THE AREA IMMEDIATELY, INFORMING AND HELPING THEIR FELLOW CITIZENS (PAYING PARTICULAR ATTENTION TO CHILDREN, ELDERLY AND DISABLED PEOPLE) AND ANIMALS.
The Governor of Attica, Giorgos Patoulis, sent a recommendation to the relevant ministers for the adoption of emergency preventive measures in view of the new bad weather.
