Just 21 years old was the climber who died on Sunday in Tzoumerka.[/B] He came from an athletic, mountaineering family and had extensive experience in mountain sports.
Theofanis Ermis Theocharopoulos was the son of Yannis Theocharopoulos, who was a climbing coach for the Greek national team, his mother Marina is a mountaineer, and both of them were race organizers. Tragic news is that the young climber was spotted by his father and informed the authorities.
In 2020, he was interviewed by gazzetta.gr. At the time, the 21-year-old said that "I have been climbing since I can remember and as my mother says, first I climbed and then I walked! So yes, climbing is ingrained in my life. I have been involved in racing since the age of seven and I didn't stop until I was 12, but then came the period of moving my family from Athens to the village of Agnada, so a dead period in competitive climbing passed for me. Now, in the last two and a half years I have returned to racing with more appetite than ever."
On social media, on his personal account, most posts are about his great and seemingly fateful love.
How the accident happened
The 21-year-old started skiing on Sunday morning and shortly afterwards went missing.
The unfortunate young man was trapped when he fell down a cliff from a height of 300 metres, resulting in serious injuries that eventually led to his death. Special EMAK teams had rushed to rescue him, while a helicopter was also operating from the air to pick him up and take him to a hospital, as he was in need of immediate medical attention and surgery.
The young man was spotted in a rough ravine and a rescue operation has since been set up, with the helicopter even unable to reach the spot the first time he flew.
His Instagram account is full of his sporting activities. Sadly, the 21-year-old died tragically in his beloved environment.
