Police authorities in European countries made 544 arrests and seized numerous illegal anabolic and placebo drugs, including alleged pills that cure Covid-19, Europol announced today.
The operation, conducted across the European continent from April to October, led to the seizure of adulterated drugs and anabolic steroids worth a total of €63 million. The target was 33 "criminal groups" trafficking anabolic steroids, hormones, metabolism drugs and other preparations, according to the European agency based in The Hague.
The perpetrators were mainly trafficking anti-cancer drugs, analgesics, anxiolytics and erectile dysfunction drugs.
Since the beginning of the pandemic, they have also made great efforts to manufacture drugs that are in high demand. "To increase their profits, the criminal networks focused on distributing fake covid treatments and manufacturing disinfectants, which were then sold over the internet," Europol explained.
Among other things, 3 million alleged Covid-19 drugs, protective masks and disinfectants were seized and authorities closed down five illegal laboratories.
