The Turkish president stressed that he will rely on the Montreux Treaty to de-escalate the situation between Russia and Ukraine

In an unexpected statement, Tayyip Erdogan condemned Russian aggression despite the close relations between Kremlin and Ankara.

"Russia's attack on Ukrainian territory is unacceptable and we understand Ukraine's struggle," the Turkish president stressed in particular to his party's council.

He added that he would rely on the Montreux Treaty to prevent the "further escalation of the Ukrainian crisis".

Recall that Volodymyr Zelensky 48 hours ago was quick to announce that Erdogan had decided to close the Bosporus Strait to Russian warships.

"I thank my friend Recep Tayyip Erdogan and the people of Turkey for their strong support. The ban on the transit of Russian warships in the Black Sea and the important military and humanitarian support for Ukraine are extremely important today. The people of Ukraine will never forget this!" he wrote on his Twitter account.
