From April the electronic identity and signature, said the Coordinator of the Digital Policy Directorate

From April citizens will be able to obtain an electronic identity, while electronic signatures on various documents will also enter our lives, said the Head of the Office of the Deputy Minister of Research, Innovation and Digital Policy and Coordinator of the Directorate of Digital Policy, Kyriaki Pantziarou, speaking at the 2nd Online Conference of FMW Financial Media Way, on the topic "Technology + Digital Transformation".

According to a statement from the company, "presenting the plans of the Deputy Ministry of Research, Innovation and Digital Policy for digital transformation of the state, Ms. Pantziarou said that in the coming years, €20 million will be allocated for digital skills development, €53 million for broadband networks and €88 million for innovative, digital entrepreneurship."

She noted that under the motto "The journey begins", Cyprus is attempting a grand leap into the digital world with the aim of the public sector being "on one screen".

Finally, Puntziarou "elaborated on plans for the new single website of the state that will contain all their services".

Industrial Applications Officer A of the Ministry of Energy, Trade and Industry, Constantine Pirkettis, presented the plans for business grants for technological upgrades, noting that "there is a lot of interest from businesses and this is positive."

Referring to the projects' objectives, he said that these are "strengthening the digital identity of enterprises, increasing the number of SMEs using information and communication technologies, including the e-commerce sector, and promoting digital entrepreneurship."

For his part, the Commissioner for Electronic Communications and Postal Regulation, George Michaelides, referred to the issue of cybersecurity, noting that "Cyprus is trying to have all the necessary infrastructure in place".



Responding to a question on online scams, Mr Michaelides "urged the public to be very careful and avoid replying to messages that they consider suspicious of fraud".

On behalf of the Cyprus Association of Information Technology Enterprises (CITEA), Dimitris Nisiotis said that as a state and businesses we are lagging behind in the field of technological upgrading.

He added that "to be able to make up for lost ground, we need to have a vision, strategy and program in digital transformation issues."

Mr. Nisiotis made special reference to the fact that Cyprus today has a unique opportunity to embark on digital transformation by utilising the funds provided for in the Recovery and Resilience Plan.

For his part, the CEO of Powersoft, George Malekkos, said that businesses should turn to the experts to determine their technological needs in order for their technological upgrade to be successful.

He added that "for the necessary technological upgrade of our businesses, everyone must contribute, including the government, banks and IT companies."
