ELAM's announcement:
While thousands of our compatriots are having a very difficult time financially, and thousands more are below the poverty line according to official statistics, banks have announced monthly increases on accounts held by their customers.
As the National Popular Front (ELAM.M), there have been more than a few times that we have called on the government, the Ministry of Finance and the Central Bank to put the brakes on banking institutions that continue to operate as a state within a state and siphon off every cent from unprotected citizens.
We demand that the new hikes, as well as other bank overcharges that have caused citizens to lose sleep, be lifted.
The government must finally take steps to end this injustice and protect citizens. It cannot stand idly by, maintain the banks' unaccountability and they hide behind the unpopular decisions of both the Ministry of Finance and the Central Bank.
