The Contract was signed, on behalf of the Government and the Director of the Department of Public Works, by Mr. Eleftherios Eleftheriou and, on behalf of the Consortium "Mobilityinchain Srl + A.L.A. Planning Partnership Consultancy LLC", by Ms. Anna Karamontani. The signing ceremony of the Contract took place in the presence of the Minister of Transport, Communications and Works Mr. Yannis Karousos, the Director General of the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Works Mr. Stavros Michael and the Mayors and Mayors of the free Famagusta District.

The preparation of the Plan will have a cost of €91,630 (including VAT) and a completion period of 12 months. It is noted that the project is co-financed by the Cohesion Fund of the European Union at a rate of 85% through the Operational Programme "Competitiveness and Sustainable Development" and 15% from national resources.

The scope of the Contract is to provide services for the development of a Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan (SUMP) for the free Famagusta Province, which will take into account all relevant integrated projects and plans, studies and projects that are being promoted, as well as those that have been implemented. Emphasis will also be placed on regeneration for the revitalisation of urban cores, through specific sustainable mobility measures. The preparation of the SDMP of the Free Famagusta District will be based on the new ELTIS guidelines (2019).

Sustainable mobility is linked to the broader objectives to which Cyprus is committed at European level for sustainable cities, to tackle climate change, reduce air and greenhouse gas emissions and use energy more efficiently.

Planning for sustainable urban mobility means changing the everyday life and culture of citizens. The main pillars of urban mobility issues are integrated spatial, urban planning and transport planning, the use and development of urban transport infrastructure and the use of public transport, the redevelopment of urban space, promoting soft/active forms of mobility and supporting and using technology.

The main objective of the SDS is to meet the different mobility needs of all our citizens and to create a modern, attractive and green urban transport system by ensuring accessibility for all users, enhancing the quality of the urban environment and urban design, promoting active mobility, ensuring personal safety and security in the transport system, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, energy consumption and improving air quality. Promoting sustainable mobility in our cities improves the quality of life and enhances green growth.

With the completion of the study of the Free Famagusta Province SDMP, we are taking a major step that will bring us closer to the implementation of projects and actions for the Free Famagusta Province, which will upgrade it more broadly and make it more sustainable and undoubtedly more ecological, more resilient, and with socially equitable structures. The aim is to improve the living conditions and daily life of the inhabitants of the area, providing the free Famagusta Province with the necessary tools to meet the objectives of sustainable development and social cohesion.

"The implementation of the SDC of the free Famagusta Province will also contribute greatly to the development of tourism, as it is known that tourists, when travelling somewhere, prefer to choose Green Cities, cities that have or areas that have public transport, and it is something that will help in its own way and role in the development of tourism in the wider region," said the Minister of Transport.
