Eastmed an unrealistic project, says Tatar Satisfied by Erdogan's statements to EU ambassadors

The EastMed pipeline is a project that was not designed properly from an economic point of view from the beginning, Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar claimed, saying it was a political move.

Commenting on the reported withdrawal of US support for the pipeline, the T/Q leader said that "they tried to create the impression that they could transport the gas, the oil, this wealth to Europe," according to the GMP.

What is important, he continued, if this wealth is one day marketed, "it is better to transport it directly from Cyprus to Turkey, which is only 40 miles away, and from there to the European Union with Turkey's existing gas pipelines. It is the most practical and feasible solution. This is the way it will be done, there is no other way. This reality has appeared."

Moreover, speaking on a TVNET television program, Tatar referred to the Cyprus problem and said that the Turkish Cypriot side does not shy away from dialogue with the Greek Cypriot side and is always ready to come to informal talks to discuss the mutual accusations between them, as well as issues related to the environment and energy. "We cannot resume formal talks before our sovereign equality and our equal representation status are first accepted," he said.

He again argued that the G/C side does not want an agreement on the basis of equality, claiming that the goal of the "Greek-Greek Cypriot duo is the unification of Cyprus with Greece and the withdrawal of Turkey from the island. We are resisting this and part of our policy to date is to fulfill what Rauf Denktash left us as a legacy," he said.

Referring to the Eastern Mediterranean, he noted that it is a great happiness for them that they have their "motherland" Turkey behind them, which continues to support them not only in the region but also in their "two-state" policy.

Referring to the Eastern Mediterranean, he noted that it is a great happiness for them that they have their "motherland" Turkey behind them, which continues to support them not only in the region but also in their "two-state" policy. The sovereign rights of the TC "people", he added, come from the past and are rights stemming from the 1960 agreements.

He spoke of continued efforts by the Greek side to buy military equipment and by Greece to militarize the Greek islands. "Nobody wants war. Everyone is a loser from a war. In Cyprus we have experienced many wars and pain. Before 1974 Turkish Cypriots were constantly oppressed. We experienced all kinds of suffering and injustices. Greek Cypriots also experienced a lot of pain in 1974. They suffered economic losses. And they were repatriated. Therefore, everyone should be aware of the importance of having peace in Cyprus and should not be allowed to be misled by those who serve the interests of the imperialist powers," he said.

According to Ersin Tatar, 99% of the Turkish Cypriot "people" support the continuation of Turkey's de facto and effective guarantees, because the Turkish army is the guarantee for peace and prosperity on the island. A strong and acceptable "TRNC", as he called the pseudo-state, is very important both for the peace and prosperity of the TCs and for the security of the Republic of Turkey, which currently has a population of 85 million, he said. Tatar welcomed the statements made by Turkish President, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, on the Cyprus issue at the lunch with EU Ambassadors in Ankara and again blamed the Greek Cypriot side for the failure of the talks because, he said, it has not got rid of the mentality that sees itself as the sole owner of the island and ignores Turkish Cypriots.
