With amount of alcohol in his system five times over the permitted limit, a 48-year-old man was found driving[/B] last night in Nicosia.

The 48-year-old's vehicle was stopped for control on a Nicosia road at around 8.30pm last night by members of the Nicosia Traffic Police. The driver was found positive in a preliminary alcohol test and was subjected to a final test, with a lower reading of 104mg% instead of 22mg%.

Subsequently he was arrested for a self-incriminating offence and remanded in custody, and is expected to be brought before a Court today for trial.

The case was investigated by the Nicosia Central Police Station.

Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs is proven to be one of the main causes of fatal and serious road collisions. As the statistics of the last five years show, one in four fatal collisions in Cyprus were caused by driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Over the past weekend, members of the Police detected and took off the road a total of 29 drivers who were found to be behind the wheel after consuming large quantities of alcohol or drugs.
