The Minister of Justice and Public Order, Stefi Drakou, welcomes the passage of the bill for the protection of persons who report acts of corruption.
In a written statement, the Minister of Justice notes that "the passage of the bill on the protection of persons who report violations of the law and in particular possible acts of corruption, creates a powerful security mechanism to encourage employees to report and disclose relevant information obtained in their working environment."
It adds that "as of today,employees in Cyprus, who make a complaint to the relevant competent authority, will enjoy full protection and no person will be subject to retaliation, such as, inter alia, dismissal, harassment and negative alteration of their working conditions."
In her written statement, the Minister also said, "this bill is part of our broader effort to fight corruption and is the first of three bills that create a strong framework for enhancing transparency."
She further explains that "the two remaining bills before the Parliament are the Establishment and Operation of the Independent Anti-Corruption Authority and Transparency in Public Decision-Making Processes."
In her statement, Ms. Drakou praised "the cooperation and the goodwill shown by the parliamentary parties in voting for the bill" and hoped that "this will lead us to the adoption of the two other bills pending before the Parliament, in order to create a comprehensive legal framework against corruption".
She thanks, especially, "the Chairman of the Legal Affairs Committee, Nikos Tornaritis, "who through his dynamic handling, contributed substantially to the completion of the bill as well as MP, Irini Charalambidou "for her time and for her suggestions that contributed to the creation of a strong bill".
Finally, the Minister of Justice expresses her thanks "to all members of the Parliamentary Committee on Legal Affairs, the Legal Service and all stakeholders."
