[Cyprus Times] Dragon's proposal for justice reform before the next Cabinet

Written statement by Deputy Government Spokesperson Ms. Nivi Parishinou on the meeting on the Justice Reform

The President of the Republic Mr. Nicos Anastasiades chaired today, at the Presidential Palace, a wide-ranging meeting on the progress of the bills on the reform of the judiciary and the creation of the Anti-Corruption Authority.

The meeting was attended by the President and one of the members of the plenary session of the Supreme Court, the Attorney General and the Assistant Attorney General, the Minister of Justice, the Heads of the Parliamentary Parties, the President and members of the Legal Committee, the President of the Bar Association and officials.

At the beginning of the meeting, the President of the Supreme Court submitted a joint statement by the members of the House in which she highlighted the positions of the Supreme Court that lift many of the reservations expressed by political forces and members of the Law Commission, while underlining the risks of a collapse of the judicial system from any further delay in the approval of the proposed reform.

A constructive dialogue followed in an atmosphere of composition and consensus, with the parties' intention to achieve the adoption of the judicial reform as soon as possible.

In the context of the dialogue that took place, the President of the Republic, taking into serious consideration suggestions of political leaders for reform in the structures of the provincial courts, asked the Minister of Justice to present a specific proposal for adoption at the forthcoming meeting of the Council of Ministers. At the same meeting, a proposal to purchase stenotyping services

The second issue discussed at the meeting is the bill concerning the establishment of an Anti-Corruption Authority.

With regard to the composition of the Authority, the President of the Republic made it clear that he has no objection to whatever procedure the Parliament approves so that in exercising the powers of the Council of Ministers, a list of three times the number of persons required by the composition of the Authority is submitted, from which the Council of Ministers will select the members.



The President of the Republic expresses his sincere thanks to all participants in today's meeting for their constructive contributions to the achievement of important reforms that are the common desire of all.
