56 dead in Mexico car crash Migrants were crammed into truck 62 other migrants remain hospitalized

One of the people injured in the crash involving a truck carrying hidden irregular migrants in southern Mexico succumbed yesterday Tuesday, authorities said, bringing to 56 the death toll from last week's tragedy.

The Health Ministry of the southern Mexican state of Chiapas said in a press release that he succumbed due to complications from "head and chest injuries" he suffered. Authorities are conducting an investigation into the identity and nationality of the migrant, one of 160 people who were traveling, crammed into the truck trailer, on a Chiapas highway on December 9.

Authorities have been able to identify 19 of the 56 people who died in the car crash, the deadliest such incident involving migrant victims in Mexico. Another 62 migrants continue to be hospitalized.

After the Chiapas crash, the government stressed that since October, there have been three operations in which some 1,400 migrants were found in truck trailers, including some 200 minors. Mexican authorities recorded more than 190,000 undocumented migrant arrivals between January and September, triple the number for the same period in 2020.
