DISY's announcement:
"Today AKEL calls for the resignation of the Interior Minister due to the conditions at the Pournara hospitality centre. Conditions that are the unfortunate result of the great increase in migratory pressures that our country is facing and which the Minister of Interior has never hidden under the carpet but is trying to address.
It should be remembered that in January the President of the Human Rights Committee of the Parliament itself, after the Committee's visit to Pournara, had stated that corrective measures had been taken, such as increasing the number of beds and moving people to the centre in Menoyia.
Immigration is at the forefront of the issues of concern to the government and the Democratic Rally. What AKEL must do is to engage in a constructive way in addressing the problem in a broader way, abandoning policies that simply lead to even greater migratory flows and even greater pressures on our society as a whole."
