Driving "high" on drugs and drunk 46-year-old man in Nicosia in broad daylight in Nicosia 6 times the alcohol and drugs test positive Police investigating

Substances such as alcohol and drugs are among the main factors causing serious and fatal road collisions. They have been shown to contribute to a reduction in the mental and psychological effort exerted while driving and to a reduction in driver performance and skills. Simply put, they contribute to the driver's reduced ability to control and drive his/her vehicle, as well as a reduced perception of the road network.

This is exactly what members of the Road Accident Prevention Unit (RAPU) of the Headquarters Traffic Police Department found during a patrol on the Nicosia-Kokkinotrimithia-Akaki motorway on Friday afternoon, when around 3.00 o'clock[/B], they noticed a car driving dangerously out of control on the road and after immediately intercepting the vehicle, they found that the 46-year-old driver was showing obvious symptoms of alcohol and drug addiction.

The 46-year-old was taken by members of the police in his vehicle to the local Kokkinotrimithia Police Station, where he was given a breathalyser test with a reading close to six times over the permitted limit. The final lower reading was specifically, 124μg%ml of alcohol in his system, instead of up to 22μg%ml which is the permitted limit.

A drug driving test followed, with the 46-year-old driver's preliminary drug test reading being positive for drugs such as amphetamines, cocaine, cannabis and opiate drugs, with him subsequently refusing to provide a sample for a final drug test, in breach of the relevant legislation.

At the conclusion of the police investigation, the 46-year-old was picked up by a familiar person and the car was held for temporary custody.

The case of driving under the influence of alcohol and refusal to provide a sample for a driving under the influence of drugs is being investigated by the Kokkinotrimithia Police Station.

The Cyprus Police places particular emphasis on tackling the phenomenon of driving under the influence of drugs, with daily checks and coordinated operations, but also with constant public information. The aim is always to prevent serious and fatal traffic collisions, to cultivate road awareness and to increase the sense of security of citizens who daily travel on the road network.
