Cyprus in the deep red again The epidemiological situation in the EU on the ECDC map

A deterioration of the epidemiological situation in relation to COVID-19 in the vast majority of regions and territories of the European Union and the European Economic Area (EEA) is recorded on the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) map, while Cyprus for another week remains in the deep red category.

After several weeks in which the situation in Romania had been improving, with some areas in the orange and even green category, the whole country is now in the red category.

The remaining EU and EEA regions are now in the deep red or red category, with the situation deteriorating in central and eastern Europe.

Cyprus, for another week, remains in the deep red category.

Most of Poland, the eastern parts of Hungary and Romania are the only regions remaining in the red category.

The map, published on Thursday, combines data on case notification rate, testing rate and case rate per 100,000 population over the last 14 days (in this case the last week of 2021 and the first week of 2022).

Note that this map does not track deaths or serious hospitalizations, nor does it track vaccination levels. It also does not record how many cases are due to the Omicron variant.

The orange zone is defined as countries or regions where the total number of new cases in the previous 14 days is between less than 50 cases per 100 thousand population, and the rate of positive tests exceeds 4%, or where the total number of new cases is between 50 and 75 cases per 100 thousand inhabitants and the rate of positive tests is more than 1% or where the total number of new cases is between 75 and 200 cases per 100 thousand inhabitants and the rate of positive tests is less than 4%.

A red zone is defined as countries or regions where the total number of new cases in the previous 14 days is between 75 and 200 per 100 thousand inhabitants, and the positive test rate is more than 4%, and where the number of new cases is below 500 cases per 100 thousand inhabitants (in which case the country moves into the "deep red" category).

The map and related data are published by the ECDC every Thursday, supporting efforts based on a recommendation from the EU Council to coordinate restrictions on free movement due to the pandemic. The maps are based on the latest data in the database sent by Member States to the European Surveillance System (TESSy) by midnight on Tuesday.
