Cyprus plays a leading role in global shipping, said the Deputy Minister of Shipping

The presence of Cypriots in high positions in international and European shipping forums proves that our country is a leader in the sector, Deputy Minister of Shipping Vassilis Demetriades told CNA.

Mr. Demetriades was asked to comment on the recent appointment of shipowner Philippos Filis to the Presidency of the European Shipowners' Association and the inclusion for the fifth consecutive year of the President of Wista International (Women's International Shipping and Trade Organization) and CEO of Tototheo Maritime Despina Panayiotou Theodosiou, in the Lloyd's list of the 100 shipping names with the greatest impact on the shipping industry worldwide.

At the same time, the Deputy Minister recalled this year's election of the President of the Cyprus Chamber of Shipping, Themis Papadopoulos, to the position of Vice President of the International Chamber of Shipping, as well as Cyprus' re-election to the Council of the International Maritime Organisation.

"I think all this is the best answer that Cyprus is a leading player in the shipping sector," he said, adding that our country "is an international power, that the presence of Cypriot shipping personalities and the state itself in European and international forums is recognised, our expertise is appreciated and it is a sector that can make us stand out," he added.

In addition, he concluded, the entity of the Republic of Cyprus is promoted and that it can play a leading role with ideas and opinions in shipping.
