Data on migrant arrivals in Cyprus given by the President ahead of the European Council

The number of migrants arriving in the territory under the control of the Republic of Cyprus has increased by about 40% compared to the previous year, the Cypriot News Agency reported, President of the Republic, Nicos Anastasiades, during the teleconference, convened by the President of the European Council Charles Michel, in preparation for the Summit Summit, to be held tomorrow in Brussels.

The migration issue is one of the issues of concern to the EU and is on the agenda of the European Council. Cyprus is the country in the EU that receives the most migrants, in relation to its population, with President Anastasiades highlighting the disproportionate burden borne by the Republic of Cyprus due to the greatly increased migratory flows.

The President of the Republic added that the largest percentage of asylum seekers are persons who are systematically and in an organised manner pushed by Turkey towards the free areas of Cyprus through the occupied territories. According to the data available to the relevant services, it appears that about 12,000 irregular migrants arrived in the first 11 months of the year, most of them from the occupied territories. The percentage of applicants and beneficiaries of international protection in Cyprus corresponds to 4% of the population. According to the relevant services, this is a huge number compared to the population of Cyprus.

In the other EU frontline countries this percentage does not exceed 1% and the Republic of Cyprus has made a request for urgent ways to find ways to provide tangible and concrete assistance to Cyprus, both from the EU itself and its partners.
