Huge gap in approaches on the Varosha issue The Greek Cypriot side is betting on a positive agenda and the MoU The Greek Cypriot side remains negative on everything except recognition Ersin Tatar is still negative on everything except recognition. actions to stop underestimating the international community
As a last-ditch effort to save Varosha, Nicosia approaches the reintroduction of the proposal for an effective MEA, seeking to prove in practice that it is based only on the positive agenda and proceeds only with international legitimacy. This is why it is asking for the help of the European factor in order to achieve its goal.
"For us punishing Turkey is not an end in itself, but to save Varosha", a source with a leading role in this campaign told us in a dramatic tone. And this is the message that the Republic of Cyprus is sending to the European Union and the permanent members of the Security Council, to whom it is appealing for justice.
The aim is to take action that will produce results and not just to say for the umpteenth time words condemning the actions of Turkey and the occupying regime. Actions that will end the implementation of the plans to open the enclosed city under Turkish Cypriot administration and bring the other side to the table for talks in search of a truly just and workable solution to the Cyprus problem.
A very difficult task given the refusal of the Turkish side to back down, taking advantage of course of the tolerance of the UN and the international community. The pseudo-state believes that Varosha is acting as leverage for the completion of the recognition project. And they are doing so regardless of the fact that they are flagrantly violating Security Council resolutions and provisions of international law.
Ersin Tatar remains focused on the plan indicated to him by Ankara, refusing to listen to the many Turkish Cypriots who are calling on him to accept the MoU proposal. It was something the occupied territories had been asking for for many years, as the conditional operation of the Tympos airport and the port of Famagusta would mean the end of the isolation.
To satisfy Turkish demands, the Turkish Cypriot leader is throwing away this opportunity, like every other effort made in recent months to make progress on the Cyprus problem. This tells us a lot about the stance he intends to take in the future, as he finds no resistance from anywhere. The international community must stop underestimating what Tatar is capable of doing, so that he in turn stops underestimating the international community.
