Up to the Russian invasion of Ukraine is invoked by Tatar to promote his two-state position In the ashes of the war in Eastern Europe he talks about the importance of Turkish guarantees in Cyprus He respects the conqueror and ignores the suffering of the victims, looking for opportunities to talk about recognition of the pseudo-state
One way or another, the war in Ukraine has mobilised the entire planet, which is watching developments with bated breath. Millions of citizens are organizing protests and collecting essentials to be sent to the affected areas, while dozens of leaders are seeking political solutions. Everyone is concerned with the substance of the war. All but one.
Ersin Tatar[/B] has seen fit to use these events to advance his claims on the Cyprus problem. At a time when the Russian invasion of Ukraine is in full swing, the occupation leader chooses to advertise his two-state claims.
"Turkey intervened in Cyprus in 1974 with the right under the Treaty of Guarantee and to this day no blood has been shed on the island because of the presence of Turkish troops," Tatar said in a speech yesterday. He added that it is very important these days for everyone to remember the need of Turkish Cypriots "to live an independent, free and secure life under the guarantee of the motherland, Turkey." Because that is obviously how he understands independence.
The importance of maintaining guarantees was also mentioned in a statement he made after the meeting he convened on the Ukrainian issue. He wanted to send the message that we should think twice if an agreement in Cyprus should take us back to 1974 and endanger the peace and security of Turkish Cypriots!
Willfully blind
Under the horrible sounds of war, Tatar is willfully blind again and refuses to see the realities. He refuses to acknowledge that this is a barbaric military invasion. He refuses to see the blatant violation of international law and the territorial integrity of a country.
His behaviour is not surprising. Blinded by his passion for sovereign equality in Cyprus, he chooses to put himself in the position of the perpetrator and ignore the suffering faced by the victims.
He could not help but see many in the international community comparing the Russian invasion of Ukraine to Attila. He could not do otherwise by nature and by conviction. And we have to negotiate a solution to the Cyprus problem with this man!
