President Nicos Anastasiades met with Colin Stewart at the Presidential Palace on Tuesday morning.
After the meeting, Mr. Stewart told reporters, among other things, that he had an excellent meeting with the President, with whom he discussed the briefing he gave to the Security Council and his meeting with the UN Secretary General in New York on the Security Council resolution on his meetings in the US.
Asked if the meeting discussed the President's proposals for the MEAs, Stewart said that "he (the President) brought it up and remains enthusiastic about it. I told him that the Security Council is very supportive of measures that can bring the two sides together, increase intercommunal contacts" and more, noting that the UN is very supportive of any MEAs that can impact the lives of people.
He added that "I have had the pleasure of working with negotiators and technical committees who are doing very important and very good work that affects people's lives as we have seen recently with coronavirus."
He said there is much that can be done to create favourable conditions for a solution while we try to find the way to a settlement.
In response to another question, Mr Stewart said that he would not convey a message to the Turkish Cypriot leader Mr. Ersin Tatar at their meeting later today, adding that Mr. Tatar was aware of the President's proposals.
He also pointed out that the UN welcomes any MEAs that contribute to more bicommunal cooperation, which is a top priority for the UN.
Asked if there was any news on the appointment of an envoy for the Cyprus problem, Mr. Stuart said there is no development, we can find no agreement between the sides on the terms of an envoy's mandate, while noting that it is something he will pursue himself.
