Online event on cancer and in particular on the challenges faced by women cancer patients, and featuring women who will share their experiences and CNN journalist Christiane Amanpour, is being organised on Tuesday by Health Commissioner Stella Kyriakidou, as part of the European Cancer Strategy and on the occasion of World Cancer Day.

As Ms Kyriakidou noted in a statement, the types of cancer that mainly affect women "present particular challenges in terms of global health equity."

The event, entitled "Ensuring equal access for all: Women and cancer - European plan to fight cancer", is the first in a series of annual events aimed at raising awareness of cancer among women and announcing the latest actions under the European plan to fight cancer

The event will be streamed live on the website https:/ec.europa.eu/health/events/hybrid-event-ensuring-equal-access-all-cancer-women-europes-beating-cancer-plan_el from 15:30 to 17:15 CY time.

In parallel, women who have been affected by cancer will talk about their personal experiences and there will be an expert discussion on ensuring access to preventive measures, early detection, treatments and care for all, as well as information on policy responses to address future needs.

CNN journalist Christiane Amanpour will be among the speakers, while Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and Commission Vice-President Margaritis Schinas will also make interventions.

"When we launched the 'Europe against Cancer' project a year ago, we committed to allocate significant resources to address the alarming inequalities identified in access to prevention, treatment and care across the EU," Kyriakidou said in a statement ahead of the event.

"In 2020 alone, more than 550,000 women died of cancer and over 1.2 million women were diagnosed with cancer in the EU. Cancers that mainly affect women present particular challenges in terms of global health equity," the Commissioner noted.

"With the European plan to fight cancer, we want to ensure that everyone has equal access to care, regardless of their gender and where they live," said Commissioner Kyriakidou.
